Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area
With hillsides of golden autumn maples, a spectacular suspension bridge and abundant wildlife, Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area is a forest full of charm. Located behind the Wanda Reservoir at elevations of 1,100 to 2,600 meters, the area was originally home to Atayal and Seediq communities; hydroelectric development began during the Japanese era, and it became a national forest recreation area in 1994. In Atayal, 'ao' means to go deep into, so Aowanda means 'deep into Wanda'. Its autumn maple scenery is among the most famous in Taiwan, but throughout the park the changing seasons continually stage nature's colorful, romantic displays.
