Basianshan National Forest Recreation Area
Basianshan was one of Taiwan's three great logging areas of old. After its bustling forestry era, Basianshan National Forest Recreation Area was established in 1986. Today the park draws on that heritage, reinterpreting former logging facilities to recall its history, and offers a variety of scenic, easy short trails. Visitors can explore the beautiful Shiwen Creek, cherry groves, tung tree woods and bamboo forests, or climb to the 2,366-meter summit of Basianshan, foremost of the 'Seven Heroes of Guguan'. The name 'Basian' derives from Japanese: the mountain is roughly 8,000 (hassen) Japanese shaku high, and 'Basian' (Eight Immortals) was chosen as a homophone. Development began in 1915.
