Outlying Islands

Outlying Islands at a Glance

What it's like

The Outlying Islands (Penghu/Kinmen/Matsu) offer a combination rare in Taiwan: pure island scenery and wartime heritage. Penghu is famed for its blue seas and sandy beaches, while Kinmen and Matsu preserve intact battlefield relics and Eastern Min architecture.

Good for

Great for travelers into snorkeling/island hopping, laid-back island life, and military history; if you're wary of small aircraft or need a highly flexible schedule, keep in mind that island flights are easily affected by weather.

Suggested days

2-3 days for Penghu or Kinmen as a single island; extend to 4 days or more if adding island hopping or Matsu.

Best season

April-September is Penghu's peak tourist season (Fireworks Festival, water activities); from October to March the northeast monsoon is strong and ferries are often suspended; in Kinmen and Matsu, dense fog in spring (March-May) frequently disrupts flights.

Getting around

All require flying in and out from mainland Taiwan (departing Songshan/Taichung/Kaohsiung); flights are limited, so book early. On the islands, renting a scooter or hiring a private driver is the most convenient way to get around, as public transport is infrequent.

Things to note

Flights to the outlying islands are prone to cancellation due to strong winds and dense fog, so build buffer days into your itinerary; in peak season, book flights and guesthouses 1-2 months in advance; when swimming at beaches, mind the tides and lifeguard duty hours.

FAQ

Are flights hard to book during the Penghu Fireworks Festival?

Yes — during the April-June fireworks festival peak season, book flights and guesthouses 1-2 months in advance, as they often sell out.

Is it a good idea to visit Kinmen and Matsu on the same trip?

Both islands require flights to and from mainland Taiwan, with no direct connection between them. It's best to split them into two separate trips or allow plenty of extra days to avoid a rushed itinerary.

Do outlying island trips often get canceled due to weather?

Strong northeast monsoon winds in autumn and winter often suspend ferry services, and dense spring fog frequently disrupts flights to Kinmen and Matsu. Build in a 1-day buffer or opt for flights when possible.
