Osaka

Osaka at a Glance

What it's like

Osaka is Kansai's hub of food and energy, known for the neon streetscape of Dotonbori and its vibrant street-food culture. With a more laid-back pace than Tokyo, it often serves as the accommodation base for Kansai itineraries.

Good for

Ideal for food lovers and those who enjoy lively nightlife and shopping; if you prefer a tranquil ancient-capital atmosphere, save your time for Kyoto.

Suggested days

3 days for the city; extend to 5-6 days if adding Kyoto/Nara day trips.

Best season

Late March to early April for cherry blossoms (Osaka Castle Park) and November for autumn foliage are the most popular; July-August is hot and humid, while January-February is dry and cold but less crowded.

Getting around

From Kansai Airport to the city: JR Kansai Airport Rapid Service or Nankai Rapi:t; within the city, the Midosuji subway line is the main artery, and the Osaka Amazing Pass covers both attraction admission and transport.

Things to note

Dotonbori/Shinsaibashi get very crowded on weekends and evenings, so watch your belongings; some old shops accept cash only; stand on the left side of escalators (opposite of Tokyo, where you stand on the right) to avoid blocking the way.
