Zhuzi Shrine (Zhu Xi Shrine)

Zhuzi Shrine (Zhu Xi Shrine)

The Zhuzi Shrine in Kinmen was founded in 1687, in the 26th year of the Kangxi reign, within the Wujiang Academy. In 1770, sub-prefect Cheng Yu, finding the academy too cramped, proposed building new halls, but left office before the work was done. The gentry Huang Rushi later purchased the site and converted it into an academy, enshrining Zhu Xi, Kuixing, the deity Wenchang, the Earth God, and Kinmen worthies Xu Sheng, Lü Dakui, Lin Xiyuan, Wang Lixing, Qiu Kui, and Xu Xie. In 1781 the academy's original site was requisitioned for the county magistrate's office, and the academy and Zhuzi Shrine were rebuilt on the former free-school grounds to the west.
