Kenting National Forest Recreation Area
Kenting National Forest Recreation Area was once an undersea garden of stony corals, calcareous algae, foraminifera and shellfish. Tectonic movement 500,000 years ago raised it into a rare forest ecosystem — an uplifted coral-reef forest combining rich ecology, monsoon rainforest and limestone terrain, offering visitors a different way to experience Kenting. Just 10 minutes from Kenting's main street, it is Taiwan's second national forest recreation area, with well-developed uplifted coral-reef forest and monsoon rainforest: giant autumn maple trees gripping the reef rock, looking-glass trees with prominent buttress roots, and white banyans trailing countless aerial roots. In 1906 the Japanese established a facility here.
