Tengjhih National Forest Recreation Area
Known poetically for its 'sea of forest waves', Tengjhih National Forest Recreation Area is southern Taiwan's best destination for forest bathing, escaping the summer heat and enjoying nature. About two hours' drive from Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Tainan, Tengjhih was traditionally Bunun territory; during the Japanese era, Kyoto University established an experimental forest here, which is why it has Japanese hinoki cypress — rare in Taiwan — and extensive Japanese cedar plantations. The famous Liouguei Police Cordon Line also passed through, leaving numerous relics. At 1,500 to 1,804 meters, the park is pleasantly cool, and its cloud-forest belt supports large trees such as stout camphor, Chinese guger tree and tanoak.
