Neidong National Forest Recreation Area
With thundering waterfalls and a setting of mountains and streams, the small but exquisite Neidong National Forest Recreation Area is a haven of tranquility and greenery on the upper Nanshi River. About 50 minutes from Xindian, Neidong is arguably the most accessible national forest recreation area in greater Taipei. Ranging from 230 to 1,500 meters in elevation and crossed by the Neidong Creek, its warm, humid climate makes it a true paradise of ferns: along just a few hundred meters of the Guanpu (Waterfall-Viewing) Trail, nearly 65 fern species can be found, including rarities like the pendulous tassel fern and climbing ferns living as epiphytes on large trees. The area was formerly known as 'Wawa Valley', said to be named for the many frogs calling at night.
