Hakozaki Shrine

Hakozaki Shrine

Hakozaki Shrine (Hakozaki-gū) is a Shinto shrine in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka, Japan. It is a Myojin Taisha listed in the Engishiki, the ichinomiya of Chikuzen Province, and was formerly ranked as a Kanpei Taisha (now a Beppyo shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines); it is also called Hakozaki Hachimangū. Together with Usa Jingū and Iwashimizu Hachimangū, it is one of Japan's three great Hachiman shrines. The "divine wind" that repelled the Mongol invasions was attributed to the shrine's divine power, and after Retired Emperor Kameyama prayed here for the "submission of enemy nations", it became a pilgrimage site for generations of Japanese warlords. Since World War II, with the disbanding of the Japanese military, it has been widely worshipped as a deity of maritime traffic and overseas protection.
