Kitano Tenmangu

Kitano Tenmangu

Kitano Tenmangu (Japanese: 北野天満宮) is a Shinto shrine in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the Twenty-Two Shrines and formerly ranked as a kanpei-chusha (imperial shrine of middle rank); today it is a beppyo shrine of the Association of Shinto Shrines. Together with Dazaifu Tenmangu, it serves as the head shrine of all Tenmangu shrines in Japan and the center of Tenjin worship. Its main deity is Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning. Kyoto locals affectionately call it "Tenjin-san". Kitano Tenmangu, Dazaifu Tenmangu, and Hofu Tenmangu are together known as Japan's three great Tenjin shrines.
