Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine on the island of Itsukushima (formerly known as Miyajima) in Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Founded around 593 CE, it has a history of about 1,400 years and is the head shrine of some 500 Itsukushima shrines across Japan. It is dedicated mainly to the three Munakata goddesses (Tagorihime, Ichikishimahime, and Tagitsuhime), with the island's name deriving from Ichikishimahime. The shrine is built over the intertidal zone on the shore of the Seto Inland Sea.
