Alishan National Forest Recreation Area

Alishan National Forest Recreation Area boasts the 'Five Wonders' — the forest railway, giant sacred trees, seas of clouds, sunrise and evening glow — making it Taiwan's best-known and most beloved forest recreation area, a jade gem shining atop the Alishan Range. The Alishan Forest Railway is a famous alpine sightseeing line: board the little forest train at Chiayi Railway Station and sway gently through forest scenery all the way to Alishan (the railway, managed by the Alishan Forest Railway and Cultural Heritage Office, is fully open on both the main line and branch lines). Alternatively, drive up the winding Provincial Highway 18 and arrive in under two hours.
