Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area
When it comes to snow and high mountains, Hehuanshan is surely the first choice for Taiwanese — and that is precisely what makes Hehuanshan National Forest Recreation Area unique. It was Taiwan's first national forest recreation area, earning that honor as early as 1963 for its exceptional scenery and alpine ecosystem. Here you can see vast Yushan cane grasslands, experience temperatures a full 18°C below the lowlands, and easily summit three of Taiwan's 'Top 100 Peaks' within the park — Hehuan Main Peak, Hehuan East Peak and Shimen Mountain — then stay at Songsyue Lodge to enjoy magnificent starry skies at night. It is also home to birds found only at high elevations, such as the alpine accentor and vinaceous rosefinch.
