Luofanju (落番居)

The Xue Yong-mai Western-style House stands in the over-672-year-old Zhushan settlement. It is a traditional one-hall, two-wing courtyard house with a storied Western-style right wing — a mansion blending Chinese and Western architecture, built in 1933. It sits directly behind Zhushan's General's Mansion and Upper Study, and to the rear left of Zhuoyan (the large rock in the village). Mr. Xue Yong-mai graduated from a fine arts university in the Philippines and went on to do business in the Philippines and Indonesia; after making his fortune, he returned home to rebuild the family residence. He also contributed, under the pen name Shi Wu, to 'Xianying,' the once-sensational overseas-Chinese magazine published in Zhushan in the early Republican era. The house was restored by the national park at a cost of over NT$10 million, combining Minnan-style courtyard and Western-style elements — a true blend of East and West.
