New Shuidiao Getou B&B

New Shuidiao Getou B&B

New Shuidiao Getou B&B occupies the right wing of a large two-courtyard traditional mansion. The timber roof frame of this historic house is of the "eleven-purlin" type (commonly known as zhanbu), with eleven purlin beams over the main body of the house and the front and rear halls connected by wing rooms on both sides—a traditional residence of considerable scale. It was built by Mr. Huang Sun-zhang during the Guangxu era of the Qing dynasty; Kinmen National Park established a 30-year superficies right and, after restoration, commissioned it to be run as a guesthouse. The four characters "Kui Bi Lian Hui" are inscribed above the door of the old house. Legend has it that the house was built as a home for a newlywed couple: the Kui star and the Bi star in the heavens echo each other from afar, symbolizing a match made in heaven, with the doorway couplets shining in harmony. Another interpretation relates to the Kui and Bi constellations.
