Zhuqian Zhongyuan City God Festival
The Zhuqian Zhongyuan City God Festival has been passed down since the founding of the Hsinchu City God Temple in 1748 (the 13th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty) and is one of Taiwan's three major Zhongyuan (Ghost Festival) celebrations. Centered on the City God's inspection procession, it features five major rites—the Yin-Yang Judge leaving the shrine, opening the Gate of Fortune, carrying the cangue to dispel misfortune, nighttime incognito patrols, and the procession with offerings to wandering spirits—solemn ceremonies with deep cultural roots. Since 2024, the festival has also pioneered the "City God Carnival," combining arts performances, interactive challenges, and creative competitions, blending tradition and innovation to become one of Hsinchu's most iconic tourism and cultural brands.
