Hikawa Shrine

Hikawa Shrine

Hikawa Shrine (Hikawa Jinja) is a Shinto shrine in Takahana-cho 1-chome, Omiya Ward, Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture. It is the head shrine of the Hikawa shrines located throughout the former Musashi Province (Tokyo and Saitama), centered on Adachi District. It is a shikinaisha (Myojin Taisha), the ichinomiya (first-ranked shrine) of Musashi Province, and an imperial festival shrine, with the former rank of Kanpei Taisha. To distinguish it from other Hikawa shrines, it is also called "Omiya Hikawa Shrine." Its main deities are Susanoo-no-mikoto, Inadahime-no-mikoto, and Onamuchi-no-mikoto. Tradition holds it was founded in the third year of Emperor Kosho's reign (473 BC), though the actual founding date is now difficult to verify.
